Dear Friends,

Freedom Meal

If you ever visit Holy Trinity Church in Clapham, South London, you will be shown the table where William Wilberforce wrote a very important document. Wilberforce, a devout Christian and Member of Parliament, at that table wrote the first draft of the legislation which was eventually passed by the House of Commons to bring an end to the slave trade in the British Empire.

What function has that table today? It is used every week as the altar on which bread is broken and wine is poured out to celebrate the Holy Communion between Jesus Christ and his faithful followers.

Truly the Lord’s Supper is our freedom meal. Sharing it we are liberated from the powers of evil and, like Wilberforce, we also become liberators.

Your friend and locum minister,

Denis
