Ash Wednesday Vespers and Ceremony of the Ashes.

In the context of our ecumenical solidarity, we start Lent together as the “Heilige Vierhoek” H4H: the 4 churches around the Spui: Mennonite Singel Church, Old Lutheran Church, English Reformed Church and Roman Catholic Krijtberg. The Krijtberg community invites you to participate in vespers with the laying of ashes. The "Ashes celebration" ties in with the circle of the church year, in which many of us received palm branches (or boxwood) on Palm Sunday last year. The old twigs are burned to ashes a year later, and with these ashes a sign of the cross is drawn on the foreheads of congregants during the service. It is the beginning of the Lent, the time of contemplation on the way to the cross and resurrection at Easter.
