Dear Friends,

The Irish writer, C.S. Lewis, asks us to imagine ourselves as a living house. God comes to rebuild that house. At first we can understand what he is doing. He’s getting the drains right and stopping leaks in the roof. But then he starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably. What on earth is he up to?

The explanation is that he is building quite a different house from the one we thought of building for ourselves. He throws out a new wing here; he puts on an extra storey there. We thought we were going to be made into a decent little cottage, but he is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it himself.
