Dear Friends,
This Sunday we celebrate Communion together, and when we do we remember the first Communion, where Jesus took a piece of bread and shocked his friends. It was the Jewish Passover and when Jesus had given thanks for the bread he broke it and said, “this is my body, broken for you.” I don’t think we can imagine the shocking effect that image must have had on those who first heard it. “This wine is my blood…” he went on to say – an equally shocking image.
And yet the astonishing truth is that God;s love and help are found in brokenness.
The crushing and grinding that goes into making bread describes exactly what it cost Jesus to save us. Yet bread is food and nourishment. Are you broken, do you feel crushed? We can be renewed by sharing in his life as well as his death. Feed on him, and you can overcome anything.
